Congrats to high school student Anika Gupta as she heads off to the international science fair!

The Bowdish lab was very proud to host Anika Gupta, a high school student, for her Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) project.

Her project was entitled “Quantifying Lung Macrophages to Understand Increased Susceptibility to Bacterial Pneumonia with Age.”

Anita won the Dr. Doyle Biology Award for the best Biology project, a Gold merit award as well as the Pinnacle Award for the Third Best in Fair and a sponsored Trip Award to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in May!

Way to go Anika!

Drs Bowdish & Mossman attend the Bay Area Science & Engineering Fair

Dr. Bowdish and Mossman attend the 2015 Bay Area Science & Engineering Fair as “Special Awards” judges. The IIDR awards a 6 week summer internship to the winner of the best senior project in human health, infection or disease. The winner gets to spend time in an IIDR lab doing real science. As always, the quality of the projects was high and choosing a winner was hard.

Catherine Bowman cleans up at the 2014 Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair!

Catherine Bowman, a grade 10 student from St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary in Hamilton, joined the Bowdish lab under the mentorship of Avee Naidoo (MSc candidate) and Kyle Novakowski (MSc student) recently to work on a project entitled “The Effects of Apigenin, Diosmetin and Chicoric Acid on TNF-Alpha and COX-2 Levels of Stimulated RAW 264.7 Macrophages.”

She received a number of awards including a BASEF gold medal, Cancer Assistance Programme Award – First, Hillfield Strathallan College Awards of Excellence- Biological Sciences Award, Hamilton Association da Vinci Award, Drs. Ranjan Sur and Monalisa Sur Award, Pinnacle Best in Fair and the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Pinnacle best-in-fair award at the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair for her project. Bowdish Lab Cleans Up at the 53rd Annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF)!

On Thursday May 21st, Bowdish Lab members were not only working hard as judges at the 53rd Annual BASEF fair, but also actively participating in presenting our research. Our high school students Jason Fan, winner of the IIDR summer studentship in 2012, and Leonard Rivet, a high school co-op student, both created fantastic posters and engaged judges in discussing their projects. Jason Fan (Right) received a Gold Merit Award and $100 for his poster entitled “Saving the World — One Ligand at a Time:  Novel Streptococcus pneumoniae Ligands for Macrophage Receptors”. Leonard Rivet (Left) received a Silver Merit Award and $80 for his poster entitled “Expression and Post-Translational Trimerization of MARCO in E.coli”.

Congratulations to both our fantastic young scientists!

Bowdish Lab Attends 53rd Annual BASEF Science Fair

Dr. Bowdish and members of the lab attended the 53rd annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) as merit and special award judges on Thursday March 21st. All members of the lab were blown away by the sheer volume of young scientists and the incredible effort these students put into their projects. Bowdish Lab members judged projects focused on Health & Life sciences. Dr. Bowdish and Dr.Mossman judged for the IIDR Summer studentship, a 6-week summer internship in the IIDR, which is one of the most sought after prizes at the science fair.vWe are all looking forward to the 54th BASEF fair.
